Palworld v1.0 gave breeding its biggest rework yet. Here’s what actually changed, based on the official patch notes.

The changes at a glance

Change What it does
Mutations (new) Breeding has a low chance to produce a stronger-than-normal Pal
Four special cakes (new) Tune talents, egg count, mutation rate, and passive inheritance
Active-skill inheritance Now drawn from the parent’s three equipped skill slots
Breeding routes Revised across the board to match game progression
Hatch time Halved on new Normal/Hard worlds started after the update
Bug fix Eggs no longer grow or shrink when repeatedly generated and collected

Mutations: high talents and a unique passive

Breeding can now produce a mutation — a low chance for an egg to hatch into a Pal stronger than the pairing would normally give. The notes are explicit that mutated Pals come with high talents and a unique passive skill, which makes chasing mutations the new endgame goal for anyone who min-maxes a roster.

Four cakes, four jobs

Breeding cakes now come in four special variants, each with its own effect (as worded in the official notes):

Cake Effect
Mushroom Cake The child’s talents are a little more likely to be high
Vegetable Cake Lays two eggs at once
Extravagant Vegetable Cake Raises the mutation chance and improves talents
Special Cake The child inherits more passive skills from its parents

In practice: Vegetable Cake for volume, Extravagant Vegetable Cake for mutation hunting, and Special Cake for passive-skill min-maxing.

Active-skill inheritance changed

From v1.0, the active skills a child can inherit are drawn from the three active-skill slots the parents currently have equipped. In other words, what you equip on the parents feeds directly into the child. If you want a specific move passed down, set up the parents’ skill loadout before you breed. You can look up each Pal’s learnable skills on the skills page.

Revised routes and the fine print

  • Breeding routes (parent combinations) were revised across the board to fit game progression. Pre-1.0 breeding-chart knowledge may no longer hold, so it’s worth re-checking pairs in the breeding calculator.
  • On Normal and Hard worlds started after the update, egg hatch time is halved.
  • A bug where eggs grew or shrank when you repeatedly generated and collected them at the ranch is fixed.

Several passives tied to breeding were tuned too. Legend, Lucky, Burly Body, and Diamond Body were strengthened, and the passive formerly called Nocturnal was renamed Insomnia. To pick parents by their stats and work suitability, the Pal catalog covers all 299 Pals.

FAQ

How do mutations work in Palworld v1.0?
Breeding now has a low chance to produce a "mutated" egg. According to the official patch notes, Pals hatched from mutated eggs have higher talents and a unique passive skill. The Extravagant Vegetable Cake raises the mutation chance.
Do old Palworld breeding combos still work?
Not necessarily. v1.0 revised breeding routes across the board to better match game progression, so pre-1.0 combo knowledge may be out of date. It is safest to re-check pairs in a breeding calculator.
How do you pass more passive skills to a child?
Use a Special Cake, which the patch notes say makes the child more likely to inherit passive skills from its parents.
